The Office of Information Technology (OIT) currently supports two types of guest access to WebVista sites. We will continue to develop other options for non-University affiliates. Please consider the options below as “Phase 1” of the process, and stay tuned for improvements.
Individual Guest Access
Non-University colleagues or participants may gain access to the password-protected WebVista environment via the myU portal on a one-time or limited basis when a faculty member, site coordinator, or departmental representative who has instructor/designer access to the WebVista site coordinates the following process:
- The site instructor or coordinator shares the Instructions for Guests information below with the guest.
- The guest visits the myU Portal page and creates an account.
- The guest forwards to the site instructor or coordinator the account information.
- The site instructor or coordinator notifies the WebVista Admin and Support Team at webvista@umn.edu that the guest account can be enrolled in the site.
- After enrollment, the guest will be able to log in to the myU portal using her/his email address as the Internet ID, then access the WebVista site via the myU my Toolkit tab.
Instructions for University Instructors/Designers
If you are a University of Minnesota affiliate who has instructor/designer access to a WebVista site, you can request access for nonaffiliated guests by following the instructions below.
- Please share the Instructions for Guests below with any potential guests for whom you need access to a WebVista site.
- Once your guest has let you know their myU account is ready, please send the following information to webvista@umn.edu:
“Please enroll [guest’s email address] in my WebVista site [title of the site as it appears in the link in myU] with [type of access: student, auditor, TA or instructor/designer] access.”
- The WebVista Admin and Support Team will enroll your guest and let you know when the guest may expect to see a link to your site in her or his myU portal my Toolkit page.
Instructions for Guests
If you are not affiliated with the University of Minnesota, follow these steps to obtain guest access to a WebVista site. Important: You must have a valid e-mail address and be prepared to enter your correct contact information for University of Minnesota administrative purposes. Your information will not be shared or made public.
- Create a myU account:
- Go to the myU portal at http://myU.umn.edu.
- Select the Click Here to Sign In link in the upper left.
- The Internet Login page will appear. Under Not (yet) affiliated with the University of Minnesota?, select the Create a New Guest Account button.
- Fill out the form with your correct and real information. You must use a valid e-mail address, or the account creation will fail.
- In the box next to Enter optional entry code, type the code given by your UMN contact, if any. Note that this step is optional. If you do not have a code, don’t worry.
- If your account creation was successful, you should see the following message:
Your guest account was successfully created.
You are now logged in. To proceed with the operation that required authentication follow this link.
- Select the this link link.
- Let your UMN contact know your guest account is ready.
- When your UMN contact tells you that your enrollment is complete:
- Go back to http://myU.umn.edu.
- Select the Click Here to Sign In link in the upper left.
- Log in with your e-mail address (i.e. myaddress@hotmail.com) as the ID, and enter the password that you set in step 1 above.
- Select the my Toolkit tab. If you do not yet see the site you wish to access, please let your University of Minnesota contact know.
Please note: OIT continues to work to improve this service and updates will be forthcoming.
Noncredit Course-Type Access
If you have a need for a large number of non-University individuals to access a WebVista site, please send e-mail to the WebVista Admin and Support team at webvista@umn.edu and include the following information:
- the title of the WebVista site to which the guests need access;
- how many participants you anticipate will need access; and
- the start date when the guests will need access and how long they will need it.
The WebVista Admin and Support Team will work with you to determine the best option for access.
